Energetic Home Clearing: when a clean home still holds old energy

Two years ago, I walked into a house that already felt like home. There were roses etched into the front door, an abundance of fruit trees and established permaculture beds - and somehow, it was within our price range.

The first time I walked through the house surrounded by other prospective buyers, I felt an instinctual voice rise from within me: This is our home - why are all of you here?

Needless to say, my now-husband Dane and I wrote a love letter to the sellers about how much we loved their home and the garden sanctuary they'd created. They ultimately chose to sell the home to us, even though our bid wasn't their highest offer.

Shortly after we went under contract, I learned that one of the sellers had found me on Instagram and noticed we shared a few mutual acquaintances. She was a somatic and dance therapist who had held her in-person sessions in what would become our bedroom.

At the time, I simply registered it as a resonant connection and moved on - there was already so much to tend before we moved in. Dane scraped popcorn ceilings and replaced the carpet with new flooring. I painted the previous-office, now-bedroom a neutral color, covering rust-colored walls. Amid it all, there were boxes everywhere, unfinished projects and what felt like a thousand moving pieces.

And even though I'm deeply attuned to the energy of a space, I hadn't yet given our new home a thorough energetic clearing. Because I already felt stretched to capacity, I reassured myself that painting the walls was a form of renewal, as was removing the carpet - which can hold years of accumulated energy. I trusted that these changes were a start to energy clearing and intended to enact a deeper clearing once we were more settled in.

Then came our first night sleeping in the new bedroom.

When Dane and I woke the next morning, he immediately said:

I slept terribly and so strangely. I felt like I was outside my body, looking down at it.

No way - me too, I told him.

I had spent the night in an unsettling, in-between dream state, feeling as though I were somatically recalibrating my entire system. Rather than settling into nourishing sleep, I felt like an ocean of scattered pieces.

And then it dawned on me.

OMG, I said to Dane. I need to clear and reset this room. It's still oriented toward somatic healing work - and here we are, having full-on somatic therapy sessions in our sleep!

That day, I made energetically clearing and blessing the bedroom my priority.

I engaged some of the deepest clearing practices I know while speaking directly to the room, thanking it for the healing work it had held and letting it know that its purpose was changing.

I reset the space as a sanctuary for deep, soothing rest - for peace, intimacy and refuge. I called upon energies of divine support and asked for blessings of the sweetest rests now and ahead to permeate the room.

Then I thanked the space and completed the clearing.

That night, the bedroom felt entirely different - and neither of us had another unsolicited therapy session in our sleep. From then on, it's become what I had asked the room to become: a sanctuary of sweet sleep and deep rest.

Our homes can hold so much: previous occupants, difficult seasons, healing work, unfinished endings, old identities and the everyday residue of our lives. This experience was a powerful reminder that a room can look fresh while still carrying the atmosphere of what unfolded there before.

Sometimes rearranging the furniture or opening the windows is enough to shift the energy. And sometimes a space asks for deeper attention - a clear acknowledgment that something has ended and a new chapter is ready to begin.

So I invite you to pause and notice:

How does your home (or the space you're currently residing) feel right now? Do the intentions of your rooms reflect the life you're living in them?

Is there a space that feels stagnant, unsettled or connected to an earlier chapter?

What would it feel like for your home to offer you greater peace, refuge and support?

These are some of the questions we'll explore in my upcoming autumn offering Home Blessing. Through three live classes, you'll be guided through tried-and-true practices for energetic clearing, blessing and lovingly tending the spaces that hold your life.

Whether you've recently moved, are preparing for a new chapter or simply feel that your space is ready for renewed care, you are lovingly invited to bless your home with love & more love!

Receive all the Home Blessing details here.

The candles are lit, the hearth is glowing and a place has been prepared for you ~ we begin on September 15th.

With heart,
Madeline
